Students Screen New Animated Film Whose Main Character Attends Caltech

Caltech students on campus for Orientation Week caught a glimpse of their real-life journeys—and an Institute landmark—on the big screen with a special pre-release presentation of the new DreamWorks Animation feature, Forgotten Island, which hits theaters September 25.

The film, set in The Philippines and now in theaters, follows best friends Jo and Raissa on one last adventure before Raissa sets off to pursue studies at Caltech. Students cheered when Raissa described her aspiration to continue her daring rocketry experiments at Caltech, with its “direct line” to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), and again when Beckman Auditorium, where they all were sitting, appeared on screen. 

Academy Award-nominated producer Mark Swift, on campus for the special event, welcomed incoming students, shared his favorite rotisserie spot, and introduced the film with its themes of friendship and finding one’s own path.
